Mel Nelson-Campbell MTAP, AThR
Art Therapist AThR , Meditation Teacher, Artist, Musician
I am trauma-informed Art Therapist (AThR), with real lived experience in complex trauma and it’s hidden and often, unspoken challenges. My therapeutic work spans over 15 years bringing art therapy to people from diverse backgrounds, and with complex needs. I am a passionate, heart-centred facilitator, creating safe spaces that enable people to reclaim their sense of belonging, agency and purpose through creative expression.
My love for the arts as therapy started back in 2006 after running my first self-care workshop in the loungeroom of my parent’s home. Being raised by migrant parents, it was in my blood and bones to strive to create a meaningful life for myself. I studied several courses in art therapy, meditation teaching and counselling, working my way toward taking bigger and bolder steps in my career.
As a woman of colour, artist, musician and art therapist, I am driven to support people from diverse backgrounds yearning to find their voice and be heard. My therapeutic, trauma-informed, arts practice led me to working with local human rights organisations, university and high school students, board members and local council. I am currently facilitating Arts-based programs for primary schools on themes of belonging, connection, self awareness, positive action and peace building strategies.
How Can Art Therapy Help You?
Art therapy is a powerful way to support people through anxiety, grief and loss, transitioning through relationships, job/career change, and the many challenging phases of life. Simple activities such as art making, creative visualisation, sound & movement bring our entire body into the present moment.
Our creativity becomes an entry point into our inner world and is an effective way to release tension & reconnect to our own thoughts and feelings. The art becomes a symbol that can inform, empower and provide invaluable new perspectives on who we are, what matters to us and what can return us to a true sense of deep belonging.
